Flemish Environment minister will not attend COP28 in the United Arab Emirates
Flemish Environment minister Zuhal Demir will not attend COP28 in the United Arab Emirates next year. She confirmed this in the Flemish Parliament on Wednesday. The minister has also skipped the ongoing conference in Egypt.
Demir had already decided that she would not participate in this year's COP27 in Egypt. Among other things, she cited the lack of attention to human rights during the conference.
Next year's COP will take place in November, in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates. "As I will not be chair of the National Climate Commission next year and will also no longer be a spokesperson on behalf of Belgium for the European Environment Council, I would have no formal duties during the COP. Consequently, I will not travel to the United Arab Emirates," she told the Flemish Parliament.
"Fortunately, the strength of good climate policy is not determined by how many hands you shake in the desert, but by the policy you implement yourself," added Demir.
