Hotels emphasise sustainability and digitalisation in updated star ratings
Flanders' tourism body has updated the criteria for hotel star classifications, placing greater emphasis on sustainability and digitalisation. The revised standards, approved in December, come into effect this month.
Hotels in Flanders can earn between 1 and 5 stars by meeting mandatory criteria for each comfort level. Since 2017, these standards have aligned with the Hotel Stars Union, used by around 20 European countries. Updates occur every five years to reflect evolving tourist and market demands.
The new criteria prioritise sustainability. For instance, rather than awarding points for replacing mattresses every five years, points are now given for thorough mattress cleaning. Extras like sewing kits and writing materials need only be available on request, while hotels tracking their ecological footprint using international standards will earn additional recognition.
Digitalisation is another focus, with options for fully automated check-in and check-out services replacing staffed reception desks at certain star levels. Minibars and room service can also be swapped for self-service kiosks.
Visit Flanders reports that 90 per cent of the 769 recognised hotels in Flanders hold a voluntary star classification. Existing classifications will remain valid until new inspections take place.
