Belgian journalist and cameraman injured in Beirut

VTM journalist Robin Ramaekers and cameraman Stijn De Smet were injured in the Lebanese capital Beirut on Wednesday night. Both are safe and being treated in local hospitals, DPG Media reported on Thursday.

Ramaekers and De Smet had been in Beirut since last Thursday, 26 September, to cover the conflict between the pro-Iranian militia Hezbollah and Israel for the Flemish broadcaster.

They were injured after an Israeli airstrike hit a suspected Hezbollah-affiliated health centre in the Bachoura district, in the centre of the Lebanese capital. While visiting the aftermath of the airstrike, the two were attacked by a mob, according to VRT NWS.

VTM owner DPG Media reports that they have been injured, but are said to be doing well under the circumstances. De Smet is being treated in a Beirut hospital for a leg wound. Ramaekers is being treated in another hospital, including for some facial fractures.

The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has escalated since last week, when the Israeli army killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. On Tuesday, Israel launched a "limited" ground attack in southern Lebanon. Belgium has advised its citizens to leave the country as soon as possible.
