Flemish media group Mediahuis acquires Euractiv
The Flemish media group Mediahuis has acquired Euractiv, the pan-European news brand focusing on coverage of European Union policies, it announced on Thursday. Euractiv reports on EU policy in 13 languages and employs journalists throughout Europe.
Competition for EU policy coverage is increasing, especially from outside the EU. With this acquisition, Mediahuis wants to become the leading European media group, while Euractiv will be able to use the media group's international resources.
"EU politics and policymaking are fundamental in today's society and interest millions of Europeans. Hence the need for strong, independent and pluralistic European coverage," said Gert Ysebaert, CEO of Mediahuis. "Euractiv has succeeded in building a promising news brand and has become a reliable source of information for EU policymakers, interest groups and other media."
In Belgium, Mediahuis publishes newspapers including De Standaard, Het Nieuwsblad, Gazet van Antwerpen and Het Belang van Limburg. The group employs around 4,600 people and had a turnover of over 1.2 billion euros last year. It now has operations in the Benelux, Germany and Ireland.
