Flemish space sector concerned about possible funding cuts by federal government

The Flemish space industry is reacting with concern to reports that the federal government would aim to save about 40 million euros on initiatives in the space sector this year. Most of the funding cuts in science policy would be sought in that sector.
The Flemish space industry represents about 45 companies, universities and knowledge institutions such as imec. The sector employs about 2,000 people in Belgium and plays a crucial role in both civilian and defence-related applications, such as satellite navigation and Earth observation.
“Every euro Belgium invests in the space sector, yields four to five times as much in return”
According to Koen Puimège, president of the non-profit organisation Flemish Space Industry (VRI), the sector has not yet been officially consulted and there remains much uncertainty about how the savings would be implemented exactly. He emphasised the negative impact of the possible funding cuts by the federal government on innovation, employment and the competitive position of Belgian companies within Europe.
“Every euro Belgium invests in the space sector, yields four to five times as much in return,” he declared. He pointed to the importance of the space industry as a strategic sector that puts Belgium on the international map, including through participation in European programmes such as Galileo and Copernicus.
Puimège hopes for alternative funding, for example through Defence or the Flemish government, but warned of the consequences if the cuts go ahead without compensation. “We want consultations with the government as soon as possible to understand which programme lines will be affected,” he said.
