George Russell wins Belgian Grand Prix in Mercedes double
British driver George Russell won Sunday’s Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps, ahead of his Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton. Australian Oscar Piastri of McLaren finished third.
World champion and competition leader Max Verstappen of Red Bull, the winner at Spa-Francorchamps for the past three years, finished fifth, behind Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, who missed out on the podium despite starting on pole.
Russell, who started sixth on the grid, made just one pit stop, while his rivals all took two. The 26-year-old held off compatriot Hamilton with a winning margin of 0.526 seconds to secure the third victory of his career.
“Amazing. The car feels really awesome,” he said in an interview immediately after the race. “Well done to Lewis, he really controlled that race. It was a team effort, the strategy guys did a great job. we rolled the dice. I want another race next weekend. The team has been working so hard.”
Spa-Francorchamps is the 14th of 24 rounds of the F1 World Championship. The drivers now have a month’s break before the next round, the Dutch Grand Prix on 25 August at Zandvoort.
