Ghent schools launch crisis care network for classmates

A pilot project called Eén van ons (One of Us) has been launched in 12 schools in Ghent. The initiative aims to provide crisis care for children in need by temporarily placing them with parents of classmates or schoolmates.
The demand for crisis care in Flanders remains high, but a shortage of places means that not every child can be accommodated. Last year in Ghent, nearly half of the children requiring care were unable to find a suitable placement. Eén van ons seeks to address this issue by offering support within the familiar school environment.
The project is a collaboration between Pleegzorg Oost-Vlaanderen (Foster Care East Flanders), Crisismeldpunt IJH (Crisis reporting point for youth welfare) and various schools, with support from the City of Ghent. Participating parents receive guidance and assistance. In addition to crisis care, the initiative also offers short-term foster care during weekends.
The first phase will be small-scale, starting with 12 schools. Partner organisations will closely monitor the project to assess whether it can be expanded.
By providing care within a child’s familiar environment, Eén van ons aims to offer a more stable and effective solution for families in crisis.
