Ghent suffers heavy European defeat against Real Betis

Belgian clubs endured a tough night in European competition, and KAA Ghent was no exception. Following heavy losses for Union and Anderlecht, the Buffaloes also faltered, succumbing to a decisive 0-3 defeat against Real Betis.
Despite holding their own in the first half, Ghent crumbled in the second, conceding three goals. This was the first leg of the knockout phase play-offs of the UEFA Conference League season 2024 - 2025 competition. Next week, a trip to Spain awaits, with qualification now hanging in the balance.
Under head coach Danijel Milićević, the team had remained undefeated in five consecutive games. The early moments of their Conference League clash did little to inspire confidence, as Real Betis immediately threatened with two quick chances. However, Ghent responded well, momentarily unsettling the Spaniards through the energetic play of Dante Vanzeir and the incisive runs of Shinji Ito.
Missed opportunities in second half
Ghent remained largely untroubled throughout the first half and looked dangerous on the counterattack. Their best opportunity came just before the break when Andri Gudjohnsen scored a goal after a well-executed counterplay, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside.
After halftime, Real Betis took complete control. The Buffaloes managed just a single shot on target by the final whistle. The Spaniards’ dominance was soon reflected in the scoreline. Three goals were scored in succession by the opposing team, resulting in the final 0-3 score.
Ghent's goalkeeper Davy Roef acknowledged the uphill battle ahead, stating, "The qualification is going to be very difficult now, but we are going to do everything we can to play a good match and show ourselves so that we do not go home with a heavy defeat in two matches."
