Guest teacher platform aims to tackle shortage in Flemish schools
A group of colleges are working with HR company Acerta to create a platform that matches guest teachers from the private sector with a school. Guest teachers do not need a teaching certificate but will undergo short training courses.
A guest teacher is someone from the private sector or a civil servant who offers their services in education for a few hours a week. The measure was commissioned by outgoing Flemish Education minister Ben Weyts to tackle the continuing shortage of teachers in the region's schools.
"Overall the reaction to guest teacher status is remarkably positive"
Figures from Acerta show that about four in 10 employees are interested in being a guest teacher in addition to their job in a company, while just over half of companies say they are willing to give employees leave on that basis.
“Smaller companies and manual workers are slightly more reluctant, but overall the reaction to guest teacher status is remarkably positive,” said Sabine Goossens of Acerta.
Guest teachers attend a four-day training course at one of six colleges, during which they learn about classroom management and lesson planning. The project is not only meant for employees but also for freelancers and retirees. In time, Acerta also wants companies to form partnerships with schools.
A campaign will launch the project next month.
