Skater Hanne Desmet wins gold and silver at first short track World Cup of season
After winning gold in the 1,500m on Saturday, short-track skating star Hanne Desmet took silver in the 1,000m on Sunday in Montreal, Canada, on the first World Cup weekend of the season. Her younger brother Stijn took silver in the 1,500m.
South Korean Gilli Kim took an early lead in the 1,500m final, but Desmet overtook her with one lap to go to win her first gold medal of the season. The final of the 1,000m also ended in a duel between Desmet and Kim, with Kim taking first place in a close finish.
Some of her rivals did not attend the Montreal meeting, including Dutch 1,000m Olympic champion Suzanne Schulting and South Korean 1,500m Olympic champion Choi Min-Jeong.
Silver for Stijn Desmet
Desmet's younger brother Stijn also won silver this weekend, finishing second in the men's 1500m behind Olympic champion Hwang Dae-heon. He reached the quarter-finals of the 1,000m.
The Desmet siblings, with Tineke den Dulk and Adriaan Dewagtere, also won the B final of the mixed relay. The victory put Belgium in fifth place in the final standings.
