Health ministers to create improved policy around menopause
Belgium’s health ministers have launched a working group that should be the next step in creating a coordinated menopause policy. Social awareness about menopause has grown in recent years but is still insufficient, the ministers said on Wednesday in a joint statement.
Menopausal women experience a range of physical and psychological symptoms but often lack support in their private or professional environment. Finding appropriate care or treatment is not always easy.
Menopause can have a significant impact on the quality of life of the person concerned, say the country’s health ministers after an interministerial conference on public health. “It is crucial that the government is actively involved by providing practical, accessible and adapted solutions to the needs of menopausal women,” they said.
With the creation of the inter-federal working group, they intend to map all the existing initiatives in order to understand what provision is available and what gaps remain.
The aim is to develop “coordinated, effective and inclusive policies” to sustainably improve the quality of life of menopausal women. This should be a turning point towards better recognition of menopause as a health issue, the ministers say.
