Hundreds pay last respects at funeral of soprano Jodie Devos in Namur
Hundreds of people paid their last respects to soprano Jodie Devos at Saint-Aubin Cathedral in Namur on Saturday. The singer died of breast cancer in Paris on 16 June at the age of 35.
Devos was regarded as one of the most talented opera singers of her generation. At a packed cathedral, with guests including the mayor of Namur Maxime Prévot and the bishop of Namur Pierre Warin, a final performance was broadcast on a screen above the altar.
Devos, born and raised in the province of Luxembourg, became an honorary citizen of the city of Namur in 2015. She studied at the Institut de Musique et de Pédagogie in Namur and the Royal Academy of Music in London. In 2014, she won second prize and the audience award of the Queen Elisabeth Competition for voice. She has performed all over the world and worked with renowned conductors and directors.
She died from the effects of aggressive breast cancer aged 35. Until very recently, she was still on stage. She last sang at the Théâtre des Champs Elysées in Paris on 30 April.
