IKEA adds electric lorries to fleet in bid to make home deliveries emission-free

IKEA Belgium is buying seven electric lorries to deliver large orders to customers’ homes. The investment of 2 million euros is intended to make 80 per cent of home deliveries emission-free by the end of the year.
The Belgian branch of the Swedish home furnishing chain has been using electric vans for some time to deliver orders from its eight shops. Now the company is adding larger electric lorries to the fleet.
“They will deliver heavier orders, such as kitchens and large wardrobe combinations, from distribution centres to people’s homes,” said project manager John Neven.
The lorries are being built by Volvo Trucks in Ghent. They have a driving range of 350-440km, depending on conditions and how heavily they are loaded, according to VPD, IKEA’s Belgian transport partner.
Sustainable transport
With its electric fleet – a total of around 100 vehicles – IKEA will be able to make 80 per cent of its home deliveries in Belgium emission-free by the end of the year. The ambition is to reach 100 per cent by 2027.
In the meantime, the company is seeking solutions to make internal transport more sustainable, by using larger vehicles. Extra charging stations are also being installed in the shops’ car parks.
IKEA Belgium delivers around 32,000 orders a month, or almost 400,000 a year. It has stores in Arlon, Anderlecht, Mons, Ghent, Hasselt, Liège, Wilrijk and Zaventem and employs more than 4,400 people.
