Immersive Smurf Experience returns to Brussels
The Smurf Experience is returning to Brussels following an overseas tour. The immersive exhibition opens on Wednesday, the anniversary of the characters’ first appearance in 1958.
Using augmented reality, holograms and video mapping, visitors to the show at Brussels Expo can walk through the Smurfs’ village and the surrounding forest.
“My father always loved new technologies, those of his time,” said Véronique Culliford, daughter of Peyo, the Brussels-born artist who created the Smurfs. “So he would have been very proud to see how his work is being showcased.”
Since its launch six years ago in Brussels, the exhibition has attracted 1.5 million visitors in the countries it has visited. It will be duplicated and presented in the US for five years from 2025.
A new feature film about the Smurfs is also due for release next summer, with singer Rihanna announced as one of the stars.
