Bart Swings rounds off speed skating tournament with marathon gold
Skater Bart Swings claimed his fourth gold medal of the Inline Speed Skating World Championships on the final day of the tournament. The Belgian took first place in the marathon in the Italian town of Montecchio Maggiore on Sunday. German Felix Rijhnen was second and Colombian Kevin Lenis third.
It was Swings' 20th World Championship gold medal. The marathon consisted of nine laps of a nearly 5 km road course in temperatures that rose to 36° by midday. The other Belgian in the race, Jason Suttels, finished 12th. In the women's race, the podium was all Colombian, with the title going to veteran Johanna Viveros. Belgians Jorun Geerts and Fran Vanhoutte finished 22nd and 25th respectively.
The Belgian team go home with seven medals, six of them for Swings: four gold, two silver and one bronze.
