Author Ish Ait Hamou debuts at Ghent film festival with BXL
Ish and Monir Ait Hamou's debut film BXL will have its world premiere at Film Fest Gent on 11 October. The film offers an intimate portrait of two young people in Brussels and aims to show a nuanced picture of the capital.
BXL follows the story of brothers Tarek, 26, and Fouad, 12. When Tarek gets a chance to realise his dream, it changes not only his life but also that of his youngest brother. The film shows both the challenges and the beauty of Brussels, according to Film Fest Gent.
Ish Ait Hamou, known as a choreographer and author, wrote and directed the film with his brother Monir. They worked with editor Nico Leunen and cameraman Maximiliaan Dierickx, among others. The music was composed by Jean-Luc Fafchamps and recorded by Brussels Philharmonic.
The leading roles are played by Fouad Hajji and Yassir Drief. There are also supporting roles for Geert Van Rampelberg and Ruth Becquart. The film is produced by Peter De Maegd and will be shown in Belgian cinemas from 22 January.
Every year in October, Film Fest Gent programmes over 100 feature and short films in avant-premiere, from cinephile gems to the more mainstream. The festival celebrates its 51st anniversary this year. The full programme will be announced in the course of September.
