Israel launches targeted attack on Beirut following Golan Heights strike
Israel launched a rocket attack on a suburb of the Lebanese capital Beirut on Tuesday night, in a targeted attack on a Hezbollah commander.
It comes three days after a missile hit a football pitch in Majdal Shams, a village in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, killing 12 children. Israel accuses Islamist movement Hezbollah of being responsible, which it denies. Defence minister Yoav Gallant said shortly after Tuesday's attack that Hezbollah had "crossed the red line”.
Two people were killed in the strike on Beirut, an anonymous source close to Hezbollah told AFP, but they were unable to confirm whether the targeted commander was among the victims.
An AFP photographer on the scene reported that the top floor of an eight-storey building had been hit and that ambulances had arrived at the scene.
Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned on Monday that his country would respond “severely” to the attack on the Golan Heights.
