Israeli army reports death of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah
The Israeli army says Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah has been killed in an air strike in Beirut. "Hassan Nasrallah will no longer be able to terrorise the world," the army wrote on X on Saturday.
"Hassan Nasrallah is dead," army spokesman Nadav Shoshani said in a brief post on X. Another army spokesman, Captain David Avraham, confirmed to AFP that the Hezbollah leader had been "eliminated". According to the army, Ali Karaki, the Hezbollah leader in charge of southern Lebanon, was also killed.
Israeli sources told the New York Times that Nasrallah was attending a meeting in an underground bunker in a Beirut suburb that was hit by an Israeli air strike on Friday.
Dozens of buildings were destroyed in the attack. Hundreds were forced to flee and at least six people were killed and 91 injured, according to the Lebanese Health Ministry. Local media say the toll is set to rise.
Air-raid sirens
Hezbollah itself has not yet responded to reports of Nasrallah's death, but a source within the movement says it has been unreachable since Friday evening. Shortly after the army's announcement, sirens went off in Israeli settlements north of Jerusalem, warning of a long-range rocket attack.
Nasrallah, 64, led the militant movement for 30 years. He lived in hiding and rarely appeared in public.
