Jan De Nul to build Georgia's first deepwater port
Belgian dredging company Jan De Nul has won the public tender for deepening the port of Anaklia in Georgia, De Tijd reports on Sunday. Financial details of the contract are not known.
Anaklia, on the Black Sea, will be Georgia's first deep-sea port. The port is a strategic project for the government as a "safe" link between cargo flows in Europe and Asia. The first ships are expected in 2029. The aim is to handle 600,000 containers a year in the first phase.
According to news outlet Georgia Today, De Nul beat two European competitors for the contract. The company, based in East Flanders, will be responsible for deepening the port and building breakwaters.
According to the newspaper, the Georgian government hopes the port will boost the economy, attract international investors and create thousands of jobs. The Trans-Caspian International Transport Route is seen as a reliable alternative to the northern shipping route via Russia and the southern route via the Suez Canal.
