Kevin De Bruyne shortlisted for UEFA Player of the Year
Belgium’s Kevin De Bruyne is one of three nominees for the UEFA Player of the Year title. His Manchester City teammate Erling Haaland and Inter Miami’s Lionel Messi are the other names on the shortlist.
The selection was made by a UEFA technical group based on the players’ performances for their club and country in the 2022-2023 season. The final three were then chosen by a jury of club and international coaches and journalists.
De Bruyne’s manager at Manchester City, Pep Guardiola, has been shortlisted for the Manager of the Year award, alongside Italians Simone Inzaghi and Luciano Spalleti. The winners will be announced on 31 August.
Earlier this week, it was confirmed that De Bruyne, 32, would be out for several months because of injury and may need surgery. He injured his hamstring early in the first match of the new Premier League season on Friday, a 3-0 win over Vincent Kompany’s Burnley.
“I have to say the injury for Kevin is a blow for us,” Guardiola told the BBC. “It’s a big loss. Kevin has specific qualities which you can lose for one or two games but, for a long time, it is really tough for us.”
