King Philippe ranked 5.9 out of 10 in Belgian poll
King Philippe will celebrate his tenth anniversary on the throne on Friday. The King, Queen Mathilde and Princess Elisabeth have all received a 5.9 out of 10 overall rating in The Great Poll on Thursday by Het Laatste Nieuws, VTM, Le Soir and RTL.
1,000 Belgians were surveyed for The Great Poll leading up to Belgium's national holiday and King Philippe's ten-year reign on 21 July. 62 per cent think Philippe has evolved positively over the past ten years. When he took the oath, there were still doubts about the capabilities of the seventh king of the Belgians.
His highest-ranking quality is his professionalism. After his professional ethics, the Belgians rated his compassion favourably. According to the Belgians polled, Philippe lacks points for naturalness and spontaneity, which they find makes him not very personable.
When asked whether Belgium should remain a monarchy or a republic, 57 per cent of Belgians said they would keep the royal house. There is, however, a clear difference between the regions. In Wallonia, 63 per cent support the monarchy as a form of government, the same number as in Brussels. In Flanders, this is only 52 per cent. Liberal voters of Open VLD and MR are still the most pro-royal, while those of N-VA and Vlaams Belang are the least.
