KU Leuven and TU Eindhoven strengthen cooperation on microchip technology
KU Leuven and TU Eindhovenhave announced a strategic collaboration to strengthen their joint efforts in microchip technology. The partnership involves key semiconductor industry leaders ASML and imec, they said in a press release on Tuesday.
The partnership between the Flemish and Dutch universities is expected to strengthen the Brainport region in Eindhoven and the Mindgate region in Leuven. It is also in line with the European Chips Act, which incentivises talent and knowledge development in semiconductor research and education.
The collaboration focuses on five strategic areas of action. The most important is a jointly funded PhD programme starting this year that will train the next generation of experts who can deliver major breakthroughs in AI, software development and mechatronics.

In addition, the partners will establish a joint seed fund, define joint research topics and prepare grant proposals. A grant facilitator will be appointed to secure funding for ongoing and future projects. Joint master's programmes and exchange opportunities between the two universities will also be established.
"In many ways we speak the same language," KU Leuven rector Luc Sels said. "I am very pleased that we can build on our mutual trust, geographical proximity and ongoing collaboration with TU/e to further position our region as the backbone of the European semiconductor landscape."
KU Leuven and TU Eindhoven have intensified their cooperation in chip research in recent years. The partners already operate a joint lab in Eindhoven, and in June they agreed that Leuven's imec can use ASML's new 350 million euro chip machine for its research.
