KU Leuven and UGent move up in THE World University Rankings

Belgium's two top-ranked universities, KU Leuven and Ghent University, have both moved up several places in the new rankings published by Times Higher Education (THE).
Oxford University remains at the top of the list for the ninth consecutive year. KU Leuven moved up two places to 43rd, while UGent gained three places to share 112th place.
Four Belgian universities are in the top 200, with the University of Antwerp sharing 168th place and the Université Catholique de Louvain in Louvain-la-Neuve in 175th place.
US and UK dominate
European, and especially Western European, universities are generally dropping in the rankings. Only 91 European universities remain in the top 200, compared with 99 in 2019. Moreover, most of the continent's universities have also fallen in the new ranking.
The University of Oxford remains at the top, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard. The top 10 is made up of seven US and three UK universities.
THE's latest report ranks a total of 2,092 universities from 115 countries, 185 more than last year. Rankings are based on parameters in the areas of education, research, internationalisation and knowledge transfer to industry. Education and research together account for the lion's share of the score.
The THE list is generally considered to be one of the most comprehensive, as it is based on a wide range of 18 parameters.
