KU Leuven celebrates 600 years with weekend of events and lectures

The University of Leuven will mark its 600th anniversary this weekend with a series of events highlighting its rich history, groundbreaking research and lasting impact on education.
While the current Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KU Leuven) was officially re-established in 1835, the institution traces its origins back to 1425, making it one of Europe’s oldest universities.
The year-long celebrations reach a high point this weekend, offering visitors a rare opportunity to explore the university’s historic buildings. Guided tours will take attendees behind the scenes to usually inaccessible locations, including the university library and archives, known for their impressive tower and monumental reading room.
Short lectures, vast coverage
In the "600-second lectures", a series of concise, insightful talks by top researchers will cover a diverse range of subjects.
The psychology and educational sciences department will explore topics such as the interplay between genes and the environment, AI’s role in education and strategies for managing stress in modern society. The faculty of arts will present discussions on archaeological discoveries, women novelists and the history of hypnosis in Belgium.
Meanwhile, the law and criminology department will ask: "Was capitalism invented in Leuven?" They will also address legal topics like human rights and liability insurance for e-bikes and e-scooters.
"The beautiful images and stories in this book show how KU Leuven honours its past while looking to the future with ambition"
In addition to these events, KU Leuven has published a commemorative photo book. Featuring images by art photographer Karin Borghouts, the book is divided into five chapters, each showcasing different parts of the university, from its historic city centre to its campuses in Heverlee, Antwerp, Ghent and Bruges. Historian Liesbet Nys provides commentary, adding historical depth to the visual narrative.
"This photo book is more than an ode to 600 years of history," said KU Leuven rector Luc Sels.
"With KU Leuven: A University in Images, we not only pay homage to our rich history but also offer an inspiring look at our lasting impact in the world of education and research. The beautiful images and stories in this book show how KU Leuven honours its past while looking to the future with ambition."
Admission for the weekend events is free.
