Leuven invites residents to over 50 events for Car-Free Sunday next weekend
Leuven will host the 16th edition of Car-Free Sunday on 25 August. This event encourages residents to come together with their neighbours for community activities.
The Car-Free Sunday programme was released on Monday at Martelarenplein in Leuven, where the organisers set the tone by spreading out a picnic blanket and enjoying snacks and drinks.
"We want to encourage the people of Leuven to use the streets and open spaces differently on Car-Free Sunday," said alderman for mobility, David Dessers (Groen). "What better way to do that than to have a picnic together?"
Sustainable mobility
Car-Free Sunday serves as the traditional closing event of the city's summer programme. "It still demonstrates the endless possibilities for sustainable mobility and inspires us to rethink how we use public spaces," Dessers added. "It’s also just a really nice day, full of activities that many people in Leuven eagerly anticipate."
This year, there are 50 planned activities, including a second-hand bicycle market, an urban sports park, stands on sustainable mobility and neighbourhood parties. A highlight for the third consecutive year is the King of the Ring event, where cyclists, scooter riders, skaters, and anyone on wheels can take a lap around the Leuven ring road under police escort on lanes typically reserved for cars. Participants will pass over the bridge at Tervuursevest and through the tunnel at the station. King of the Ring starts at 16:00 on the ring road at Justus Lipsiusstraat.

During Car-Free Sunday, the city centre will be completely closed to motorised traffic from 10:00 to 18:00, with a few exceptions. Buses will follow detours, and the inner ring road from the station to Naamsepoort will be closed. However, the outer ring road will remain open to motorised traffic.
