Longo Borghini wins Giro d’Italia Women
Italy's Elisa Longo Borghini won the Giro d'Italia Women on Sunday, with Belgium's Lotte Kopecky finishing second. Longo Borghini had started the stage just a second ahead and maintained her lead.
Sunday's final stage began with an incredibly tight overall classification. Just one second separated front-runner Longo Borghini from reigning world champion Kopecky.
The 117km stage from Pescara to L'Aquila featured 2,500m of elevation gain, with most of the serious climbing in the first half of the stage. In the final classification, Longo Borghini had a 21-second advantage over Kopecky.
The final stage was won by Kimberley Le Court of Mauritius, who finished ahead of American Ruth Edwards and German Franziska Koch in a three-woman sprint. Longo Borghini finished fourth after a late attack.
