Lotte Kopecky wins silver in elimination race at track cycling world championships
Belgium's Lotte Kopecky won the silver medal in the elimination race at the track cycling world championships in Ballerup, Denmark, on Thursday. The reigning world champion lost the sprint for gold to New Zealand's Ally Wollaston. Bronze went to American Jennifer Valente.
Kopecky easily survived the first sprints in the race. She then took control in the final, and eliminated fellow favourite Valente with an attack just before the last drop-off. But she was bested by Wollaston in the final sprint of the race.
This silver medal is the third World Cup medal in less than a month for 28-year-old Kopecky. In recent weeks, she has won gold at the road world championships in Zurich, Switzerland, and silver at the gravel world championships in Leuven.
On Sunday, she will compete in her second and final event of the track world championships, where she will defend her world title in the points race.
