Suspect in 2019 death of 90-year-old in Ghent arrested in France
A man wanted for the manslaughter of a 90-year-old woman in her home in Ghent five years ago has been arrested in France. He was caught by gardeners while stealing vegetables from an allotment, French media reported on Thursday.
The 35-year-old from Romania was caught last week in a village east of Lyon. Police then realised he was the man being sought by Belgian prosecutors in relation to the death of a woman in 2019.
Former fencing champion Norris Georgette van den Bogaerde, 90, was found unconscious in her home in Ghent on 27 June and died in hospital a week later. Her house had been ransacked and a gold bracelet stolen. The events are believed to have taken place two days earlier.
A European arrest warrant had been issued against the man, who has reportedly been living illegally in France for two years. He is due to appear before the investigating judge on Thursday and is expected to be handed over to Belgian authorities.
