Man wielding a knife overpowered outside Alexander De Croo's residence in Brussels

A man with a knife was arrested at the official residence of outgoing federal prime minister Alexander De Croo on Monday morning. The man had tried to enter the official residence. This was reported by Barend Leyts, director of communications for the outgoing prime minister, and the news was confirmed by the Brussels police.

"We can confirm that a man was arrested at around 10:00 at Wetstraat 16", the police reported. "The man was allegedly armed with a knife and had made threats towards the military personnel present. They overpowered the man while waiting for our police zone, which is responsible for further investigation. The man's motives are currently unclear."

Through Leyts, De Croo also stated that he was "shocked by the incident". "We would like to express our sincere thanks to the military police officers. We are closely monitoring the situation together with the police. We are relieved that no one was injured in the incident," De Croo told Belga via his communications director.
