Elise Mertens returns to World No 1 spot in doubles ranking
Elise Mertens has regained the top spot in the WTA doubles rankings, published on Monday. Mertens jumped from fourth to first place after victory at the WTA 1000 tournament in Guadalajara, Mexico.
Mertens won the tournament on Saturday with her Australian partner, Storm Hunter, her 18th doubles title on the WTA circuit. She previously held the top spot for several weeks in 2021 and in summer 2022. Hunter climbs from sixth to second place.
In the singles rankings, Mertens retains 29th place. Greet Minnen, the Belgian number two, climbed five places to 63rd after her semi-final place at the WTA 250 tournament in Guangzhou, China. This is the highest ranking of her career. At the beginning of the year, she was ranked 225th. Yanina Wickmayer (down eight places to 78), Ysaline Bonaventure (up two places to 111) and Maryna Zanevska (down four places to 144) complete the list of Belgium's top five players.
There are no changes at the very top of the singles: Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka retains the lead, ahead of Poland's Iga Swiatek and American Coco Gauff, who beat Sabalenka in the US Open final earlier this month. Maria Sakkari of Greece jumps from ninth to sixth place.
