‘Moroccan measles variant’ found in Brussels sewage water
Research by KU Leuven university shows that the “Moroccan variant” of the measles virus has been found in sewage water in Brussels. Morocco is currently facing a large measles outbreak, but the virus is also on the rise in Europe.
Elke Wollants, lab manager at KU Leuven's Rega Institute, explained that a particularly high concentration of the measles virus was found, with a peak on 11 March. However, only 18 cases have been reported this year, according to Brussels health institute Vivalis. That is likely to be an underestimation of the situation, although Wollants points out that this type of measles has a large viral load, which can affect the results.

Morocco is currently facing a “historically large” measles outbreak. Since the end of 2023, more than 25,000 cases have been recorded, resulting in about 120 deaths. The type found in Brussels is the variant of the measles virus which is prevalent in Morocco, the genotype B3.
“The virus is on the rise all over Europe, this is alarming,” said Wollants. “The Netherlands already had 45 cases in two weeks, and Spain and France are also getting into trouble.”
Vaccination status
According to a recent report by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, Belgium, with 551 cases, ranks fourth in Europe for infections between 1 February 2024 and 31 January 2025.
Wollants urges everyone to check their vaccination status. People born before 1970 have usually had the disease and are therefore protected. Those in their 30s can check their vaccination status online.
Because past vaccinations were not always recorded digitally, it is advisable to also check old vaccination cards or GP records. Those who are not or incompletely vaccinated can get a free catch-up vaccination from their GP. A double catch-up vaccination is also recommended in case of doubt.
