Nafi Thiam's Budapest bid in question due to Achilles tendon issues
Belgian athlete Nafi Thiam doubts she will participate in the Budapest World Athletics Championships. The two-time Olympic champion has yet to confirm her participation to Belgian Athletics, the athletics federation said on Wednesday.
Achilles tendon problems have been bothering Thiam for some time, as she revealed in June. In July, she had to skip the Diamond League meetings in Monaco and London. At the Belgian Athletics Championships, she returned home after the 100m hurdles without running the final or speaking to the press.
Le Soir had previously reported that there were doubts in Thiam's camp about her participation in the World Championships. Belgian Athletics has now confirmed that no decision has been taken regarding Budapest. It is not clear when this decision will be made.
Two world titles
If she competes in Budapest, Thiam could defend her title from last year in Eugene. She also became world champion in London in 2017, so success in Budapest could mean a third world title.
In January of 2023, Nafi Thiam was voted Belgian Sportswoman of the Year for the fourth time in her career. The heptathlete was unbeatable in 2022, winning gold medals at the World Championships in Eugene, USA and the European Championships in Munich, Germany.
The World Athletics Championships in Budapest will take place from 19-27 August.
