North Macedonia's Radmila Šekerinska appointed NATO deputy secretary general
North Macedonia's former Defence minister Radmila Šekerinska has been appointed NATO deputy secretary-general, the alliance announced on Tuesday. Šekerinska, 52, will be the first official from her country to hold the post.
Šekerinska will be serving alongside Dutchman Mark Rutte, who has been secretary general since October. She will take over from Mircea Geoana of Romania this year.
"I am happy to announce the appointment of Radmila Šekerinska as the next deputy secretary general" Rutte said on Tuesday. "She is a true believer in NATO, knows the work it takes to join the Alliance and what it means to be a full member. I look forward to working with her as she takes up this vital role."

Šekerinska served as Defence minister of North Macedonia from 2017 to 2022. She has also been the country's deputy prime minister. She is not NATO's first female deputy secretary general. American Rose Gottemoeller held the post from 2016 to 2019.
North Macedonia has been a member of the Alliance since 2020.
