Gold coin issued to mark silver wedding anniversary of royal couple
Belgium's Royal Mint has issued a commemorative coin to mark the 25th wedding anniversary of King Philippe and Queen Mathilde. It is a 12.50 euro coin, limited to 2,500 copies and priced at 189.95 euros.
For the first time, the portraits of the King and Queen are depicted together on the same side of an official commemorative gold coin. One side of the new coin features a double portrait of the royal couple, accompanied by the number 25, while the other side has a profile portrait of King Philippe.
Philippe and Mathilde were married on 4 December 1999. They have four children: Elisabeth, Gabriel, Emmanuel and Eléonore.
“For 25 years, our royal couple have embodied devotion, both to each other and to Belgian society," said Finance minister Vincent Van Peteghem. "For all these years, they have played an important role in uniting our country. This is therefore a moment of joy and gratitude for their commitment. With the issue of this coin, we would like to warmly congratulate them on their silver wedding anniversary."
The Royal Mint issues a 12.5 euro coin in pure gold every year.
