New Mons railway station ready to open for passengers
The new walkway of the renovated Mons railway station will open for passengers on Wednesday morning. The modernisation project dates back to 2001 and has suffered long delays.
Originally, a simple walkway and an above-ground car park were envisaged for the renovation of the train station, with a budget of 37 million euros. But the scope of the project evolved into an architectural and intermodal station designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, with underground car parks and sustainable facilities. The project was eventually delayed by 10 years and the cost rose to 480 million euros.
The new station has five covered platforms, including one for buses and taxis. Commuters can easily reach it on foot from the city centre, with a new pedestrian bridge between Place Léopold and Place des Congrès. This bridge is not accessible to cyclists.
The official inauguration is scheduled for 31 January.
