No agreement reached in federal negotiations: "We will continue working"
Federal government negotiators concluded their talks early Monday morning without reaching an agreement but pledged to continue discussions in the coming days. This was reported on Monday by the negotiators' staff.
Representatives from N-VA, Vooruit, CD&V, MR and Les Engagés convened in the Chamber’s office on Sunday at 14:00., working through the night before adjourning at 05:15. Key topics on the agenda included reforms in pensions, the labour market, taxation and the budget framework.
"There has been a lot of hard work, and the measures will be further refined in the coming days to explore how the parties can reach an agreement," one source said. Another insider noted progress on the budget, though they acknowledged the negotiators had yet to achieve the desired balance. “The socio-economic aspects will be addressed chapter by chapter in the coming days,” they added.
Despite the progress, Monday will not see any further negotiations, confirmed CD&V chairman Sammy Mahdi. Reflecting on the long night of talks, he shared on Instagram: “Good at talking and negotiating. Going home with small eyes. First day off in a long time on Monday. Then we will continue negotiating.”
