Non-profit sector calls for more investment with demonstration in Brussels
A national demonstration by the non-profit sector is taking place in Brussels. Trade unions expect several thousand people at Thursday’s event, as they call for greater investment in the health and welfare sector.
Unions are primarily protesting against staff shortages and high workload in the non-profit sector and calling for more investment. They say not enough attention has been paid to the needs of the sector within the negotiations for a future federal government.
“Despite the already acute staff shortage in the field, unions have organised themselves to get as many people as possible onto the streets of Brussels,” said Sébastien Robeet, national secretary of the CNE union.
The demonstration started at Boulevard Roi Albert II near Brussels North station. From there, marchers will head towards the Botanical Gardens, Mont des Arts, the Royal Palace and Rue de la Régence. The event will end at Place Poelaert, near the Palais de Justice.
Police recommend avoiding the neighbourhood, with disruptions expected until 14.00 on the inner ring road. Public transport company STIB will divert certain bus lines during the march and trams 92 and 93 will be temporarily interrupted. Metro lines will run as normal.
