North Sea Port to build 30 kilometres of new cycle paths
North Sea Port will build 30 kilometres of new cycle paths in its port area over the next five years to improve cycling safety and encourage sustainable commuting. This was announced at the opening of a new cycle path along the Moervaart in Ghent.
The cycle path along the Moervaart was officially opened on Wednesday. At almost two kilometres long, it fills an important gap in the cycling network.
"This is actually a missing link in which we have invested 1.7 million euros," says North Sea Port COO Peter Van Parys. "Because we think it is important that our customers' employees can get to and from work in a safe, smooth and sustainable way, preferably by bike."
The new lanes are not just for professional use. "These cycle paths are also used by recreational cyclists at weekends," says Van Parys. "We want to introduce everyone to our ports, so that everyone can become a supporter."
Ghent and Zeeland
The construction, a collaboration between North Sea Port and various authorities, cost a total of €2.1 million. The province of East Flanders contributed more than half a million euros. The investment is not limited to Flanders. Of the 30 kilometres of new paths, 17 kilometres will be built in Zeeland and 13 kilometres in Ghent.
By 2029, the port area will have 184 kilometres of cycle paths, linked to regional cycle routes and local routes. In addition, North Sea Port will install cycling systems to monitor usage and make improvements where necessary.
