Number of organ transplants increased by 8.5 per cent last year

There is a growing willingness among Belgians to donate organs. In 2024, the number of transplants increased by 8.5 per cent compared to 2023. The number of deaths of people on the waiting list for an organ transplant fell by 7.5 per cent.
According to the Federal Public Service (FPS) Health, Belgium has the highest number of donors per million inhabitants within Eurotransplant, the international non-profit responsible for promoting and coordinating organ transplants in European countries including Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany and Croatia.
There has been a remarkable increase in heart, liver and kidney transplants. Although the figures are largely positive, the FPS Health did notice a slight drop in the number of lung transplants.
“These positive figures are a sign of the growing awareness of organ donation and the solidarity of Belgian society”
The waiting list for heart and lung transplants also decreased significantly, while the waiting list for liver and kidney transplants grew slightly.
“These positive figures are a sign of the growing awareness of organ donation and the solidarity of Belgian society,” the FPS Health said.
“It remains vital that we continue to inform and raise awareness so that this trend continues in the future. The importance of discussing organ donation is great. This contributes to the continuous improvement of the situation and the life-saving impact that organ donation has on thousands of patients.”
People interested in registering their wishes concerning organ donation can do so at on the My Health website.
