Olympics: Bashir Abdi wins silver in the marathon
Bashir Abdi has won silver in the Olympic marathon, bettering the bronze he won at Tokyo in 2021. The 35-year-old from Ghent finished second behind Ethiopia’s Tamirat Tola on Saturday morning in a season’s best time of 2:06:47.
Tola’s time of 2:06:26 was an Olympic record for the event, held on the penultimate day of the Games. Bronze went to Kenya’s Benson Kipruto.
Belgian teammates Michael Somers and Koen Naert finished 22nd and 61st.
Abdi’s medal follows the gold and bronze won by Nafi Thiam and Noor Vidts in the heptathlon and Sarah Chaâri’s bronze in the taekwondo on Friday. Team Belgium have now won a total of 10 medals at the Paris Games, beating the seven they took home from Tokyo three years ago.
