One person killed in latest Clemenceau shooting

One person was shot dead at Clemenceau metro station in Anderlecht on Saturday night, the Brussels public prosecutor’s office confirmed. A search for the perpetrators is under way.
The shooting is the latest in a series of incidents in Brussels. Last week, four shootings took place in the city: one in Saint-Josse-ten-Noode, two at Clemenceau and one in the Peterbos neighbourhood in Anderlecht, in which one person was killed.
According to Brussels prosecutor Julien Moinil, the shootings are part of a territorial dispute between drug gangs.
"We must intensify judicial investigations to dismantle the networks and those pulling the strings"
The fact that the killing took place “despite the reinforced police presence 70m away” shows that “these thugs will stop at nothing”, said Anderlecht mayor Fabrice Cumps, who visited the scene on Saturday night.
“We must continue to occupy the site, but that is not enough: we must intensify judicial investigations to dismantle the networks and those pulling the strings.”
Transport disruption
According to images circulating on social networks, Saturday's incident took place at the entrance to the station, near the access gates, at around 9.30.
Public transport was severely disrupted as a result of the police intervention in the neighbourhood. Metro lines 1, 2, 5 and 6 were interrupted, as was tram 81. Bus lines were diverted in both directions. Circulation has now returned to normal.
Interior minister Bernard Quintin also attended the scene. “This umpteenth shooting is unacceptable,” he said. “Last week [after a previous shooting at Clemenceau] measures were taken by the federal government and the local police. We must now take new and strict measures. An emergency meeting will be convened soon with all services concerned.”
