Orban visits Beijing after controversial Moscow trip
Following his controversial visit to Moscow, Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orban is now visiting China. He arrived in Beijing on Monday for a “peace mission 3.0”, he wrote on X.
Orban also posted a photo showing him being greeted at the airport by Hua Chunying, China’s deputy Foreign minister.
The Foreign ministry in Beijing circulated an announcement about the visit. Among other things, Orban will meet president Xi Jinping for talks on “issues of mutual interest”, it said.
Orban travelled to Moscow on Friday to visit Russian president Vladimir Putin, a move that attracted a lot of criticism, especially within the EU. Hungary has held the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union since 1 July, but several European leaders have stressed that Orban has no mandate to speak to the Russian president on behalf of the EU.
