Paralympics: Maxime Carabin sets Games record on way to T52 400m final
Para-athlete Maxime Carabin set a new Paralympic record in the 400m T52 class during Friday’s heats in Paris. Finishing in a time of 54.48 seconds, he beat the previous record set by Japan’s Tomoki Sato at the Tokyo Games three years ago.
Carabin, already the world record holder, went in the first of the two heats and finished almost 10 seconds ahead of Switzerland’s Fabian Blum. The top three in each heat and the two fastest times qualified for the final, to be held shortly after 19.00 on Friday at the Stade de France.
The 23-year-old from Liège is the reigning world champion in the 100m, 400m and 1,500m in the T52 class. These are his first Paralympic Games. He is scheduled to compete in the 100m on Thursday evening.
T52 is a wheelchair class for athletes with very limited movement of the trunk and legs, and slight to moderately limited movement of one arm and shoulders.
