Part-time art education academies open their doors in Flanders and Brussels

Part-time art education academies in Flanders and Brussels are opening their doors on Saturday for the Day of the Academies. This year, Belgian director Charlie Dewulf is ambassador for the event and the overarching theme is “play”, in all its forms.
Non-binary director and screenwriter Charlie Dewulf is themself a former pupil of the academy for image, music and word in Menen, West Flanders province. “The academy gave me the freedom to rebel as well as to create,” they stressed. “Without that space to think differently, I would never have become a director.”

As ambassador for the Day of the Academies, they want to highlight creative freedom. They proposed 25 creative challenges to the participating academies, such as the task of creating art at the highest spot in the city, a 24-hour art marathon, art gifts for local residents and record-breaking parades. About 165 academies and their more than 200,000 students took up the challenges.
The Day of the Academies is an organisation of the associations DenkBeeld, supporting visual and audiovisual arts, and VerDi – which focuses on music, word art and dance.
