Partial bridge collapse on E42 in La Louvière leaves at least five people injured

A bridge under construction on the E42 in La Louvière partially collapsed on Thursday afternoon, injuring at least five people.

Work on the bridge over the Canal du Centre led to the collapse, sweeping away several construction cranes. One crane fell onto a barge waiting to collect rubble from the site.

As a precaution, the parallel bridge, which is temporarily handling traffic in both directions, was closed to allow emergency services to operate safely. A diversion has been set up via the A501 and E19.

Work on the bridge began in February 2024 with asbestos removal, followed by demolition. Access to the canal was already restricted on Thursday morning for dismantling operations. Waterway traffic remains suspended until further notice.
