Pope denounces grave humanitarian situation in Gaza Strip during Christmas address
Pope Francis denounced the dire humanitarian crisis in Gaza on Wednesday. He also reiterated his appeal for the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas. In his traditional Urbi et Orbi (to the city (of Rome) and to the world) Christmas address, the Pope also called for a ceasefire in Ukraine and urged steps toward lasting peace.
"With my eyes fixed on the cradle of Bethlehem, my thoughts go out to the Christian communities in Palestine and Israel, especially to the beloved community of Gaza where the humanitarian situation is very grave," the Pope said. "Let the firing cease, the hostages be freed and the population, exhausted by hunger and war, be helped."
The Pope also voiced hope for a ceasefire "in tortured Ukraine." “May we have the courage to open the door to negotiations and gestures of dialogue in order to achieve a just and lasting peace,” the Pope concluded.
