Pope to end visit to Belgium with Mass at King Baudouin Stadium
Pope Francis will conclude his visit to Belgium on 29 September with a mass at the King Baudouin Stadium, the Bishops' Conference reported this in a press release on Friday. Those wishing to attend the mass must register in advance.
The pope will visit Belgium from 26 to 29 September and will travel to Brussels, Leuven and Louvain-la-Neuve, among other places. On the last day of his visit, Sunday 29 September, he will celebrate mass at 10am in the King Baudouin Stadium.
Pope Francis will beatify Carmelite Anne of Jesus, who died in Brussels. This is exceptional, as beatifications are normally only carried out during celebrations in Rome.
The Spanish-born Anne of Jesus was a close associate of Teresa of Avila and helped her reform the Carmelites. From Brussels, where she died in 1621, she founded monasteries in Louvain and Mons and helped establish monasteries in Antwerp and Cracow.
Unique visit
Those wishing to attend the Pope's multilingual mass can register individually from 19 August at www.pausbezoek.be. Tickets are free of charge. The event will also be broadcast worldwide.
The Pope's visit to Belgium is part of the six-hundredth anniversary of KU Leuven and UCLouvain. This is an exceptional visit, as the pope visits very few European countries.
During his Belgian trip, the pope will meet various authorities, organisations and communities, but will also make time for the general public. The final programme will be available soon at www.pausbezoek.be.
