Premium scheme for sustainable fuel at Brussels Airport extended

Airlines can this year still get a premium at Brussels Airport for the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The application period for the premium has, with the support of the federal government, been extended because the premium budget was not fully used up in 2024.
Airlines can apply for the SAF premium since the beginning of 2024 for flights departing from Brussels Airport, with a maximum of 200,000 euros per airline. The premium can cover up to 80 per cent of the additional cost of the greener fuel, it was announced at the time. Airlines such as Brussels Airlines and DHL previously announced they were subscribing to the premium.
SAF is made from sources like frying oil, animal fat waste and biomass. The fuel is mixed with conventional kerosene. SAF is still a lot more expensive than the conventional fuel.
Brussels Airport aims for SAF to account for 5 percent of total fuel consumption by airlines by 2026.
