Record 21 Belgian companies gear up for Game Developers Conference in San Francisco
The next edition of the Game Developers Conference (GDC), to be held from 18 to 22 March in San Francisco, USA, will welcome a record 21 Belgian companies. The GDC is one of the world's leading trade shows for the video game industry and attracts around 30,000 visitors each year.
The GDC is a must for companies specialising in video games. The sector generates more revenue than the music and film industries combined and is still growing, despite recent waves of redundancies that have put the major studios under pressure since the start of the year.
Last year, 20 Belgian companies were represented at the GDC. Flemish Media minister Benjamin Dalle accompanied them to promote Flanders' tax breaks for the games industry. In recent years, Flanders has been active in promoting the development of the games industry.
"We support the local gaming industry on several fronts, with our vision statement Level Up Flanders," Dalle said, adding that the government wants to "play up the Flemish strengths and underline why investing in the Flemish gaming sector is so valuable".
This year, a total of 21 Belgian companies, including seven from Flanders, nine from Wallonia and five from Brussels, will travel across the Atlantic for five days of conferences, meetings and networking. Some will be presenting their own games, while others will be showcasing their talents or looking to forge partnerships.
The recent worldwide success of Baldur's Gate 3, named Video Game of the Year at the recent Game Awards and produced by Ghent-based studio Larian is indicative of the rapidly developing games sector in Belgium.
