Red Devils coach Tedesco unveils final European Championship squad
Domenico Tedesco, the coach of Belgium’s national football team, has announced the team selection for the European Championship.
All countries participating in Euro 2024 had to submit their selections on Friday. Belgium's Red Devils are taking only 25 players to the tournament, rather than the permitted 26. There is thus no place in the final selection for Arne Engels of Augsburg and Mandela Keita of Antwerp.
Koen Casteels of German club Wolfsburg is the first-choice goalkeeper, in the absence of Thibaut Courtois. Matz Sels was also in the running until recently. Defenders Jan Vertonghen and Arthur Theate are also in the squad, although they may not be fit in time for the opening match against Slovakia on 17 June.
The tournament starts on 14 June, with the host country facing Scotland.
Belgium's squad consists of:
Goalkeepers Koen Casteels (Wolfsburg), Thomas Kaminski (Luton Town) and Matz Sels (Nottingham Forest)
Defenders Timothy Castagne (Fulham), Zeno Debast (Anderlecht), Maxim De Cuyper (Club Brugge), Wout Faes (Leicester City), Thomas Meunier (Trabzonspor), Arthur Theate (Rennes), Jan Vertonghen (Anderlecht) and Axel Witsel (Atlético Madrid)
Midfielders Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City), Yannick Carrasco (Al-Shabab), Charles De Ketelaere (Atalanta), Amadou Onana (Everton), Orel Mangala (Lyon), Youri Tielemans (Aston Villa), Arthur Vermeeren (Atlético Madrid) and Aster Vranckx (Wolfsburg)
Forwards Johan Bakayoko (PSV), Jérémy Doku (Manchester City), Romelu Lukaku (AS Roma), Dodi Lukebakio (FC Sevilla), Loïs Openda (RB Leipzig) and Leandro Trossard (Arsenal)
